Best Techniques for Shaving Against the Grain

I’ve been trying to get a closer shave by going against the grain, but it always ends in irritation. Any tips on technique or products that help minimize razor burn?

One thing that made a big difference for me was mapping my hair growth direction first—it’s not always obvious, and going ATG without knowing can lead to unnecessary tugging. Also, try a pre-shave oil or cream before your shave gel; it adds an extra layer of protection. Fresh blades are non-negotiable—dull ones are a recipe for irritation. Stick with light, short strokes, especially on sensitive areas like the chin. It’s worth experimenting with milder razors too if you’re still getting burn.

YO DUDE!!! Shaving ATG can be a REAL PAIN if you’re not careful!!! First off, make sure you’re using the THREE-PASS METHOD—WITH the grain, ACROSS the grain, THEN against it. NO SKIPPING STEPS!!! Also, HYDRATE YOUR FACE FOR AT LEAST 3 MINUTES WITH WARM WATER—it reduces cutting force by 70%!!! If you’re still getting irritation, maybe switch to a milder razor or try an electric one for the ATG pass. AND FOR THE LOVE OF DOOM, use a FRESH blade and LIGHT pressure!!!
